Obsidian Canvas is best when the visual workspace should stay close to notes, files, and markdown links. Excalidraw is better when sketching, diagrams, and free-form drawing matter more than structured note relationships. For most Obsidian users, Canvas is the default for note maps, while Excalidraw is the stronger drawing layer.
Canvas works well when the visual board is made of real vault material: notes, cards, files, and links. It helps users arrange existing knowledge without leaving the Obsidian environment.
Excalidraw is stronger when the goal is to draw, diagram, and explain. It is more flexible for visual thinking that starts as a sketch rather than an arrangement of existing notes.
Use Canvas for note maps and project boards. Use Excalidraw for diagrams, sketches, and visual explanations that need a drawing-first interface.
It can replace simple mind mapping workflows, especially when the map is connected to vault notes. Dedicated tools may still be better for complex diagramming.
